| In certain circumstances a single blood test is not sufficient to confirm the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. In these circumstances the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend that a 75 grammes oral glucose tolerance test is necessary to confirm diagnosis.
The Test
You should refrain from having anything to eat or drink overnight. An early appointment will be made for you in order to have a blood sample taken. Following this you will be given a drink containing 75 grammes of glucose. You should then rest for 2 hours having nothing else to eat or drink during this time. After 2 hours has elapsed a further blood sample will be taken from you. This concludes the test.
The results of this blood test should be available within 2 – 3 days. An appointment will be made for you to discuss these results and any implications that the results may have.
