How long should you keep your child off school?

The basic rule is that they should not go unless they are fit and well. The following states the minimum time that a child should be kept home from school and whether your doctor should be notified :-
(click on an underlined link to display an information sheet)
  • Mumps - keep at home until the swelling subsides, and inform your doctor
  • Whooping cough - keep at home for at least 7 days after starting treatment and your doctor should be notified
  • Glandular fever - stay at home until recovered from the symptoms. They may feel tired for many weeks but can attend school if feeling well enough
  • Chicken pox - keep at home until at least 6 days from the appearance of the rash
  • Measles - keep at home at least 4 days after the appearance of the rash, and notify your doctor
  • German measles - keep at home until they have recovered from the symptoms, keep them away from pregnant women
  • Hand, foot and mouth - keep at home only whilst unwell
  • Impetigo - keep at home until treatment started
  • Conjunctivitis - keep at home until treatment started
  • Head lice - keep at home until treatment started, household and close contacts should also be treated
  • Cold sores - no exclusion from school necessary
  • Stomach upsets - keep at home whilst unwell with vomiting and diarrhoea
