Guidelines for Routine Antenatal Care for the Healthy Pregnant Woman

All pregnant women should be offered evidence-based information and support to enable them to make informed decisions regarding their care.

A schedule of antenatal appointments should be determined by the function of the appointments. For a woman who is nulliparous with an uncomplicated pregnancy, a schedule of ten appointments should be adequate. For a woman who is parous with an uncomplicated pregnancy and obstetric history, a schedule of nine appointments should be adequate.
Definition of pregnancy and many of the terms you will come across
.

Pregnant women should be informed about the purpose of any screening test before it is performed, this should be written and verbal. The right of the woman to accept or decline a test should be made clear.

At each antenatal appointment, midwives and doctors should offer consistent information and clear explanations, and should provide pregnant women with the opportunity to discuss issues and ask questions.

The needs of each pregnant woman should be reassessed at each appointment throughout pregnancy, and referral for additional care will need to be made if complications occur as identified in the midwife to consultant referral guideline.
